Why Nigeria Needs Global Allies in the Fight Against Terrorism: A Call to Action by CCC Chairman Olukolade
The battle against terrorism is a global challenge, and Nigeria, a country grappling with its own security concerns, must not go it alone. This is the message from Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), the Chairman of the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), who emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism and other transnational threats. In an interview with TVC, Olukolade, a former Director of Defence Information, highlighted the evolving nature of insecurity, which demands a collective response beyond national borders.
"Terrorism is a global phenomenon, not a problem confined to Nigeria," Olukolade stated. "Through collaboration with international partners, we can effectively address the threat and fortify our national security architecture."
The retired general also praised the resilience of Nigerian troops, who have made significant operational gains against non-state actors, showcasing growing professionalism and commitment despite logistical and operational challenges. These achievements, he noted, are a testament to the troops' dedication and the government's efforts to improve their welfare.
Olukolade also drew attention to the annual Remembrance Day, which serves as a strategic platform to boost morale among serving personnel and honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes. The day is a moment of national reflection, reinforcing the country's security priorities and the government's commitment to the well-being of veterans and their families.
Progress has been made in improving the welfare of veterans, particularly in benefit payments and social support, according to Olukolade. However, he called for sustained policy attention to both troop welfare and international engagement, emphasizing that Nigeria's security is strengthened when it remains firmly embedded in the global security community.
The former DHQ spokesman expressed confidence in the current leadership of the Ministry of Defence, led by General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), who understands the professional and psychological realities of military service. Olukolade concluded by urging continued focus on both troop welfare and international cooperation, ensuring that Nigeria's security efforts are supported by a strong global alliance.
