Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain in Queensland: What You Need to Know (2025)

Queensland is bracing for more wild weather! After a dramatic weekend, the forecast predicts thunderstorms and intense rain for specific areas, leaving residents on edge. But here's the twist: these storms are expected to be highly localized, affecting only 'small pockets' of the region.

Two people were rescued from floodwaters on Saturday, with swiftwater rescue teams springing into action near Beaudesert. The State Emergency Service received over 130 calls for assistance, highlighting the severity of the situation. And the rainfall amounts were staggering! Kenilworth on the Sunshine Coast saw 65 millimeters in just half an hour, and Kooralbyn recorded a whopping 136 millimeters overnight.

BOM senior forecaster Angus Hines warns that Queensland and New South Wales will likely experience these isolated yet intense storms on Sunday. 'Localized heavy rain is expected,' he stated, emphasizing the potential for flash flooding. The rain may target the same waterlogged areas as the day before, leading to rapid river level rises.

The BOM has issued flood warnings for several rivers, including the Bremer River and Warrill Creek, due to heavy rainfall in their catchments. Residents near the Logan River are also on alert, with minor flooding already occurring in some areas.

While most of Queensland can expect a break from the wet weather on Monday, the Far North will continue to experience rain and storms.

And this is where it gets intriguing: could these localized storms be a blessing in disguise, providing much-needed relief to drought-stricken areas? Or will they bring more chaos and disruption? Share your thoughts below!
