It all began around 7:40 pm on a Monday evening when police spotted the rider cruising along Main Road in Te Kauwhata without proper headgear. Officers attempted to signal for him to pull over, but he chose to ignore their commands. Senior Sergeant Mary van Dongen explained that, given the nature of the situation, the police decided not to pursue him directly but instead took down details of the bike for further investigation.
The very next day, authorities followed up on the leads and visited a residence in Te Kauwhata, where they successfully located and impounded the dirtbike. But the surprises didn’t end there. During the search, law enforcement officers discovered a stolen farm vehicle parked on the property, along with various tools and utensils associated with drug use. This discovery prompted a warrantless search, which uncovered firearms and ammunition—serious weapons that pose a significant threat to community safety.
As a result, two individuals were taken into custody. The first, a 26-year-old man, was scheduled to appear in Huntly District Court on November 25, facing charges including receiving stolen property, driving while disqualified, failing to stop, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The second, a 24-year-old man, appeared in court today, charged with breaching his bail conditions.
