Meet the Millionaires: Safaricom's Shangwe @25 Promotion Makes Dreams Come True (2026)

Imagine your life changing overnight with a single transaction. Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Well, for several Kenyans, this dream has become a reality, thanks to Safaricom's Shangwe @25 consumer promotion. Safaricom PLC recently announced four new millionaires, catapulting them into a new financial stratosphere. This brings the total number of millionaires created in just two weeks to five! But here's where it gets controversial... some might argue that these promotions are just a marketing gimmick. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

The newest winners are Josephine Waswa from Bungoma, Bernice Mumo from Makueni, Abdi Dahir hailing from Garissa, and Josephat Mwilaria from Athi River. They join Yvonne Wanjiku Kang’ara, a 20-year-old from Ngeu, Kiambu County, who was the first to strike gold. Each of these lucky individuals will receive a staggering Sh1 million. And that's not all! In the spirit of Safaricom's 25th-anniversary celebrations, each winner also receives an additional Sh250,000 earmarked for a community project of their choice. This is a brilliant move by Safaricom, as it not only transforms individual lives but also contributes to the betterment of communities.

During the award ceremony in Bungoma, Josephine Waswa, a 36-year-old sugarcane farmer, was overcome with emotion. She described the moment of receiving her cheque as a "great blessing" and "truly life-changing." Can you imagine the feeling? "I can’t believe that the small Sh 19 airtime I bought on M-PESA has turned me into a millionaire," she exclaimed. Josephine plans to expand her farming business and invest in land to build a home. Showing incredible community spirit, she will also support Kasosi Primary School in Mabanga by providing desks for Grade 1, 2, and 3 pupils, addressing a severe shortage where multiple children are forced to share a single desk. What an incredible act of generosity; does it make you want to do more for your community?

Bernice Mumo, a 26-year-old cosmetology graduate from Makueni, is a frequent M-PESA user. For her, the win couldn't have come at a better time as she navigates the challenges of job hunting. She had simply purchased airtime and paid for her Wi-Fi using M-PESA – routine transactions that unexpectedly changed her life forever. "I am still in shock," Bernice shared. "I always see people winning, but I never imagined I would one day be one of them." Bernice plans to use her community project funds to construct and equip a laboratory at Mwalano Dispensary in Mukaa, Makueni County. This will significantly reduce the distance residents have to travel for essential diagnostic services, offering much-needed relief to her community. And this is the part most people miss... the long-term impact these community projects will have.

Abdi Dahir, a 25-year-old turn boy from Garissa and the primary provider for his family, was overwhelmed with gratitude upon hearing the news of his win. "Everyone in our family depends on me," he said. "I really don’t know what to say or how best to thank Safaricom for locating me. I can’t believe that the small credit I always buy to make calls to customers has made me a young millionaire." Abdi intends to use his winnings to support his family and build his mother a house back in Garissa. For his community project, he aims to provide Sangailu Primary School in Garissa with essential water tanks and desks.

Josephat Mwilaria, a 51-year-old businessman from Athi River, initially met the news with skepticism, a understandable reaction given his past experience with fraud. He only believed it after personally visiting a Safaricom shop for confirmation. Josephat relies on M-PESA for all his transactions, citing its convenience and security. He plans to reinvest in his business and use the community funds to support Pillars of Hope Children’s Home by providing food donations and covering school fees for selected children.

Since its inception, the Shangwe @25 promotion has been showering thousands of customers daily and weekly with a range of prizes, including cash, data bundles, devices, and business support tools. Each week, over 800 customers win amounts ranging from Sh 10,000 to Sh 100,000, contributing to over 50,000 weekly winners. Safaricom anticipates that more than 5 million customers will win prizes totaling Sh 250 million throughout the promotion period!

Participation is simple: customers can transact on M-PESA, send money, pay with M-PESA, use or redeem Bonga Points, or purchase Safaricom products like data bundles, voice bundles, digital services, or Home Fibre subscriptions. Merchants and M-PESA agents can also qualify through Buy Goods, Pochi La Biashara, and transactions of Sh 1,000 and above.

So, what do you think about Safaricom's initiative? Is it a genuinely beneficial program, or just clever marketing? And more importantly, if you were a winner, what community project would you support and why? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
