Former EXCITER Guitarist John Ricci's New Project POWERRAGE: A Fresh Start or a Familiar Tale?
Embracing a New Chapter
John Ricci, the former guitarist of EXCITER, is set to release his debut album with his new band, POWERRAGE, titled 'Beast'. This album marks a significant step forward for Ricci, as he aims to leave his past behind and forge a new path in the music industry. With a fresh lineup, including bassist Todd Pilon, vocalist Jacques Bélanger, and drummer Lucas Dery, POWERRAGE is ready to make its mark.
Ricci's decision to start anew is not without precedent. In 1985, after the release of EXCITER's first three classic albums, Ricci left the band, citing a desire to move on. This time, however, Ricci is determined to create something entirely his own, stating, 'I didn't want to be another EXCITER. It was time to start from scratch.'
A Musical Vision
POWERRAGE is a true reflection of Ricci's musical vision, as he wrote everything on the album, including the music, lyrics, and melodies. The eight songs on 'Beast' are brand-new, with no rehashed riffs from his EXCITER days. This commitment to originality is a testament to Ricci's desire to create something unique and not be defined by his past.
A Familiar Story?
However, some may argue that this is a familiar tale. In 2018, Ricci left EXCITER again, leaving a void in the band. This time, the band replaced him with Daniel Dekay, who had previously played with DIEMONDS. The similarities between this situation and the 1985 departure are undeniable, leading some to question if history is repeating itself.
A New Beginning?
Despite the similarities, Ricci is confident that POWERRAGE will be a success. He believes that starting over is a challenging task, but he feels prepared to make it happen. With a fresh lineup and a new album, POWERRAGE is set to make its debut on April 24 via High Roller Records. Will this new beginning be the fresh start Ricci desires, or will it be another chapter in a familiar story? Only time will tell.
