The Friendship Club at Communicare in St Brelade is more than just a weekly gathering—it’s a lifeline for those who might otherwise face social isolation. This week, members were treated to a festive feast featuring a hearty turkey pie with all the trimmings, a lively Christmas raffle, and a soul-stirring performance by a local choir. It’s these small moments that make a big difference.
Dot Slous, 86, couldn’t contain her joy. She described the Christmas lunch as 'lovely as usual' and was overjoyed to win four raffle prizes, including a festive cookie jar and a handbag she deemed 'perfect for carrying my presents home.' When asked about the volunteers, she beamed, 'They’re absolutely wonderful—we’re truly spoiled.'
But here’s where it gets even more inspiring: Lead volunteer Grace, who has dedicated over 25 years to the group, emphasizes the importance of staying socially active. 'Keeping connected with others is so vital,' she says. 'Our members come from all walks of life, yet they’ve formed such a tight-knit group. It’s truly remarkable to see them bond like family.'
However, not every story is without its challenges. George Nixon, 93, shared a poignant tale. He and his wife used to attend the club together, but after she was diagnosed with cancer and dementia, she withdrew. 'She passed away in February,' he said. 'My son encouraged me to return, reminding me I shouldn’t be alone.'
And this is the part most people miss: For newcomers, the first visit can be daunting. Lorraine Murphy admitted she was 'nervous' initially. 'I hesitated by the corner before stepping in,' she recalled. 'But I’m so glad I did—everyone is incredibly welcoming, the meals are delicious, and there’s always someone to chat with.'
Among the attendees was Morris Murray, a sprightly 102-year-old who summed up the day perfectly: 'I’m a lucky young man.' Reflecting on his childhood Christmases, he reminisced about hanging his stocking and receiving 'nuts and a bit of coal for luck.' He chuckled, 'The coal didn’t bother me much.' His fondest memories, however, were of family board games like snakes and ladders—simple joys that still bring a smile to his face.
