Illegal Waste Dumping at North Wales Cemetery: A Disrespectful Act (2026)

It's truly disheartening to see waste carelessly discarded in a cemetery that honors our heroes. Recently, two individuals faced fines for their irresponsible behavior after they were caught illegally dumping trash in a cemetery located in Gwynedd, Wales. In response to this incident, the local authorities have put up warning signs at the Caernarfon graveyard to deter further fly-tipping.

During the holiday season, Cyngor Gwynedd received numerous complaints regarding littering at the Llanbeblig Cemetery. This expansive site is not just a resting place for loved ones; it holds the graves of 53 war casualties and commemorates 12 victims of the tragic 1952 "St Kevin" disaster, which remains the second-deadliest commercial airline crash in Wales' history.

The council took swift action by launching an investigation through their enforcement service. On January 6, they gathered evidence showing that fly-tipping had indeed occurred, leading to penalties for the two offenders involved. One of them was slapped with a £180 fine for improperly disposing of waste and for transporting it without the necessary license. Meanwhile, the second individual received a £150 fine for neglecting their duty of care, typically a situation where homeowners mistakenly hire unlicensed individuals to take away their waste.

Cllr June Jones, who oversees street services, emphasized the council's zero-tolerance policy towards such selfish acts that tarnish the Llanbeblig area. She stated, "We will not tolerate actions like those witnessed recently. We are committed to issuing fixed penalty notices and pursuing prosecutions against those who violate these laws."

Jones further highlighted the negative consequences of littering, which not only makes public spaces look unsightly but also poses health risks, damages the environment, and endangers wildlife.

She urged community members to be vigilant and ensure that any person or service they hire for waste disposal is licensed. Although many businesses operate responsibly, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the reckless individuals willing to dispose of waste irresponsibly, which could lead to serious repercussions for those who engage them.

Residents are encouraged to report environmental offenses through the Cyngor Gwynedd website or the apGwynedd app. Steven Edwards, the street enforcement service manager, expressed gratitude to the residents who reported the issues at Llanbeblig Cemetery.

To help residents dispose of their waste properly, the council recommends following these essential steps:

  • Regularly utilize the council's waste and recycling services to prevent waste accumulation. You can find information on collection dates and guidelines for what items belong in each bin on the council's website.
  • If you’re clearing out your home and have a substantial amount of waste, take it to your nearest recycling center. Just remember to book a slot and sort your waste beforehand.
  • For larger items such as sofas or freezers, you can arrange for a bulky waste collection through the council.
  • If you plan to hire a private or commercial service for house clearance, it's crucial to verify that they are registered and licensed to perform this work. A list of authorized waste transporters can be found on the Natural Resources Wales website.
