The clock is ticking as the biennial games commence on December 9th, but Gilas won't hit the court until the 14th when they face Malaysia in their title defense. Despite the time crunch, Black believes the competition is tougher than in previous years.
"Defense is my forte as a coach and player, so we'll be united on that front," he asserts. With veterans like Bobby Ray Parks, Matthew Wright, and Thirdy Ravena, the team has a solid foundation. However, recent eligibility rule changes have forced adjustments, excluding naturalized players like Justin Brownlee and Ange Kouame.
Black adapts by focusing on defense, stating, "It's easier to teach defense in a short time than offense." With a front court featuring Justin Chua, Abu Tratter, and Cedrick Manzano, Gilas aims to dominate the boards and create easy scoring opportunities.
The tournament format adds pressure: after facing Malaysia, Gilas takes on Vietnam in the group stage. Only the top team from each group advances directly to the semifinals, while second and third-place teams must navigate a crossover game to secure their spot in the semis on December 17th.
