Last year, the entertainment industry buzzed with excitement as it learned that Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind 'Juno' and the genre films 'Jennifer's Body' and 'Lisa Frankenstein', would be producing a new film. This project, titled 'Forbidden Fruits', marks the feature directorial debut of Meredith Alloway and is an adaptation of the stage play 'Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin, and Through Her We All Die' by Lily Houghton. The film has secured a U.S. and Canadian distribution deal with Independent Film Company and the Shudder streaming service, with IFC planning a theatrical release in 2026.
The highly anticipated film boasts a stellar cast, including Lili Reinhart ('Hustlers'), Lola Tung ('The Summer I Turned Pretty'), Victoria Pedretti ('You'), Alexandra Shipp ('Barbie'), and newcomer Emma Chamberlain. The story revolves around Apple, an employee at Free Eden who secretly leads a witchy femme cult in the mall store's basement after hours, alongside her fellow 'fruits' Cherry and Fig. However, when a new hire, Pumpkin, challenges their performative sisterhood, the women must confront their inner demons or face a bloody end.
The screenplay, written by Alloway and Houghton, promises a gripping tale of secrets, sisterhood, and supernatural elements. The production team behind 'Forbidden Fruits' includes Diablo Cody, Mason Novick, Trent Hubbard, and Mary Anne Waterhouse, with Charlie Traisman and Katherine Romans of Madhouse Films, and Casey Durant and Rachel Douglas of Range serving as executive producers.
Scott Shooman, Head of AMC Networks' Films Group, expressed enthusiasm for the film, stating, 'We are thrilled to collaborate with the talented minds behind 'Forbidden Fruits'. Meredith Alloway and Lily Houghton's script captivated us, and we're committed to ensuring a theatrical release. With such a talented cast, 'Forbidden Fruits' is poised to be a must-see in 2026.'
Alloway shared her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, 'I'm honored to have found a home for 'Forbidden Fruits' with IFC Films, a studio that encourages creativity and artistic freedom. IFC has produced and distributed numerous films that have inspired me over the years. Their support and advocacy for a theatrical release have been invaluable. Working with this incredible cast has exceeded my expectations, and I'm thrilled to see their talent come to life on screen.'
