As the regular season of 2025 approaches its conclusion, the Dallas Cowboys are making headlines by allowing three players to begin practicing in hopes of activating them from injured reserve before their crucial game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team has opened a 21-day practice window for running back Phil Mafah, defensive end Payton Turner, and cornerback Josh Butler—none of whom have been able to hit the field during this season so far.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "It's just a chance to get them on the grass and see the guys compete. I know they're excited to get out there and play the game that they love."
Among these players, Butler's recovery has been particularly challenging. The young defensive back suffered a severe knee injury that ruled him out for the entire season in late November 2024. For nearly a year, he has dedicated himself to rehabilitation, and although he had expressed his eagerness to return to play several weeks ago, the Cowboys chose to proceed cautiously regarding his comeback. This injury halted what was shaping up to be an inspiring breakout season for Butler, who had made a significant impact with a stellar performance against the Washington Commanders just days before his injury against the New York Giants.
In contrast, Turner and Mafah are newcomers who have yet to make their mark in regular-season games for the Cowboys. Turner was signed as a free agent in March but suffered a rib injury during August's training camp, which placed him on injured reserve shortly after. Meanwhile, Mafah, drafted in the seventh round in April, displayed potential during training camp and preseason games but found himself sidelined with a shoulder injury, similarly landing on IR alongside Turner.
With the specifics of the Cowboys' season finale against the Giants still undecided, the opening of this 21-day window on December 17 indicates that swift decisions will be necessary regarding the participation of these players. If they hope to see any action in the 2025 season, the clock is ticking, and time is of the essence.
