Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Shantha Rangaswamy are set to have stands named after them at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium, a significant milestone in Indian cricket. This decision, made by the KSCA, marks a special recognition for these legendary players and pioneers in the sport.
Dravid, a former Indian captain, is renowned for his exceptional batting skills, amassing over 13,000 runs in Tests and 10,000 runs in ODIs. Kumble, another former captain, holds the record for the most wickets taken by an Indian in Tests and ODIs, with an impressive 619 and 337 wickets, respectively. Rangaswamy, a trailblazer in women's cricket, was India's first female captain in 1976 and led the team to their first Test series win. She also became the first woman to receive a lifetime achievement award from the BCCI.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium has been a second home to these players, a place where they spent countless hours training, competing, and creating memories. Dravid expressed his gratitude, stating, 'It's been a second home to me, a place of great happiness and disappointment, but also where I found everything that shaped me.'
This naming ceremony is a testament to the impact these players have had on the sport, and it is only the fourth time in India that a stadium stand or gate has been named after a woman cricketer, following in the footsteps of Jhulan Goswami, Mithali Raj, and Anjum Chopra. The recognition is a powerful reminder of the contributions made by these athletes, both on and off the field, and it invites fans to reflect on the rich history of Indian cricket.
