Connor Bedard's electrifying performance, including his second hat trick of the season, propelled the Chicago Blackhawks to a decisive 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. This thrilling matchup at the United Center in Chicago marked the second clash between these two teams this season.
Their previous encounter in Calgary was a hard-fought battle, resulting in a 4-0 win for the Blackhawks and featuring three intense fights. This time, the Blackhawks entered the game without key players like their captain, Nick Foligno, alongside Jason Dickinson and Tyler Bertuzzi. However, they were riding a wave of success, having won four of their last five games, and were eager to extend their winning streak.
Meanwhile, the Flames, currently at the bottom of the NHL standings, were seeking redemption.
Game Highlights
The first period was a closely contested affair, with the Blackhawks narrowly leading in shots, 5-4. Both teams had power-play opportunities, but neither could capitalize. Ryan Donato broke the deadlock for the Blackhawks, putting them up 1-0 after the Flames struggled to clear their zone. The Flames challenged the goal, claiming goaltender interference, but the call stood. Despite another power play for the Blackhawks, the Flames managed to fend them off.
The second period saw the Flames hit the post early on, setting the stage for a pivotal moment. Jake Bean's tripping penalty gave the Blackhawks a power play. A delay-of-game penalty by Calgary’s Kevin Bahl gave the Hawks a brief five-on-three advantage, but the Flames successfully killed it off. However, this didn't deter the Blackhawks, as Connor Bedard scored, making it 2-0 after goaltender Dustin Wolf mishandled the puck.
But here's where it gets controversial... Connor Murphy's cross-checking penalty allowed Matt Coronato to get the Flames on the board, closing the gap to 2-1 with only 28 seconds left in the second period.
The third period saw Rasmus Andersson tie the game 2-2 for the Flames, but then the Blackhawks took control. Bedard scored his second goal of the game, putting the Blackhawks ahead 3-2. Despite a delay-of-game penalty by Wyatt Kaiser, the Flames couldn't find the equalizer. Oliver Moore extended the lead to 4-2 for the Blackhawks. Colton Dach's holding penalty against Adam Klapka gave the Flames another chance, but they failed to score. Bedard sealed the victory with his second hat trick of the season, making it 5-2. It's worth noting that Bedard's first hat trick of the season also came against the Flames on November 7th.
The game became heated towards the end, with Ilya Mikheyev and Adam Klapka receiving matching roughing penalties in the third period.
The Blackhawks ultimately outshot the Flames 23-21.
