The situation for the 49ers has taken a significant turn for the worse. As they kicked off the second half, their star running back, Christian McCaffrey, found himself sidelined and is now uncertain about returning to the game due to a stinger injury.
According to Tom Rinaldi, a sideline reporter for Fox, McCaffrey was receiving treatment on his left shoulder after enduring two substantial hits during the first half of the match. In that initial period, he managed to carry the ball nine times for a total of 29 yards and also caught five passes, adding another 39 yards to his stats.
In the meantime, running back Brian Robinson took the lead as the team restarted the second half. The 49ers faced a major setback when they turned the ball over on downs; Brock Purdy was sacked by Leonard Williams, resulting in a loss of 14 yards on a crucial fourth-and-2 play at the Seattle 44-yard line. This turnover handed the Seahawks a prime opportunity with excellent field position.
Additionally, tight end Jake Tonges, who was filling in for the injured George Kittle—out for the entire season due to a torn Achilles—limped off the field during the opening drive of the half. Tonges suffered a foot injury and is also listed as questionable for a return.
UPDATE 10:23 P.M. ET: In a surprising turn of events, McCaffrey made his way back onto the field for the 49ers’ second series of the half, even as the team trailed significantly, with a score of 27-6.
